Leaf Blower: Buying Guide

Leaf Blowers are very useful tools for quickly and easily removing leaves, debris, and grass or hedge clippings. But what factors should you consider when buying a new leaf blower and vacuum?

In this guide, you'll find some key aspects to keep in mind when choosing the best leaf blower.

Guide Index:

What is a Leaf Blower

Leaf blowers are tools designed for removing accumulations of vegetation like leaves, branches, grass clippings, dirt or sand after gardening work and similar tasks. The blower operates through a system that emits strong air jets and may also include a vacuum function. Additionally, it can also be used to clean gutters or dry garden furniture.

Types of Leaf Blowers and Vacuums

Leaf blowers are divided into Electric Blowers and Gasoline-Powered Blowers. The first category includes all leaf blowers that can be powered either by an electrical cable or by battery.

To choose which type is most suitable for your specific needs, you should consider the size of the area where it will be used, the type of terrain, and the desired results.

  • Electric Blowers: require little maintenance, are quieter and more eco-friendly, but are better suited for small spaces due to the limitation of the power cord. This type of blower is ideal for domestic use.
  • Battery-Powered Blowers: are much quieter, require less maintenance, and don't emit toxic exhaust fumes. Moreover, unlike electric models, they don't have the cord limitation, allowing for more freedom of movement in larger spaces and around obstacles.
  • Gasoline-Powered Blowers: are recommended for areas over 1000 m² or for professionals who need a flexible tool suitable for different surfaces. They are generally more powerful and completely independent from power sources compared to electric or battery-powered blowers, but require more maintenance and careful storage as they don't tolerate long periods of inactivity well. They are also noisier and heavier to use.

Key Features to Consider in a Leaf Blower

To choose the model that best suits your needs, there are several important factors to consider that will determine your choice of blower and affect the final results.

1. Power

The main aspect to consider is the blower's power; this is typically measured in Watts (W) for electric models and in Horsepower (HP) for gas-powered models. Undoubtedly, a more powerful blower will deliver more professional results, allowing you to work faster. Generally speaking, models for hobby/domestic use start at 25cc displacement, while more professional models go up to 75cc.

2. Turbine Material

The turbine is a fundamental component of the ventilation system, responsible for moving air to create the powerful airflow needed to blow and vacuum leaves and debris. It's always preferable to choose turbines made of steel or similar materials rather than plastic, especially for blowers with vacuum functions, as they might accidentally suck up small stones or twigs that could damage this component.

3. Speed Control

This feature allows you to adjust the blower's power during both blowing and vacuuming operations. Adjusting the speed can enable the tool to vacuum only part of the material in the airflow's path, leaving heavier materials like stones, gravel, soil chunks and other particles in place that could damage the tool if vacuumed.

4. Noise Level

Finally, it's important to evaluate the noise level produced by the blower, especially if you plan to use it in areas with noise pollution restrictions or in any context where you might disturb public peace with the noise of your tool's gas engine. Battery-powered or electric models are undoubtedly quieter than gas-powered ones.
