Winches: Buying Guide

Winches are machines designed for heavy load handling in numerous sectors: from vehicle recovery to construction, including forestry, industrial and marine applications. Winches can be battery-powered or engine-driven (2-stroke/4-stroke) and allow you to pull, lift or move heavy loads safely and efficiently. In this guide you'll discover how winches work, the different types available, and what factors to consider when choosing the best winch model for your operational needs.

What is a Winch and How it Works

A winch is a machine consisting of a rotating drum around which a cable (steel or synthetic) is wound, powered by a motor that can be electric, hydraulic, manual or mechanical. Winches are designed to pull loads horizontally.

The operation is based on winding or unwinding the cable through drum rotation. The most powerful models feature automatic brakes, disconnection systems and load limiters, increasing safety levels, especially in static load situations or uphill pulling.

Some winches also feature double line pull with a snatch block that allows doubling the pulling force using a pulley block. Essentially, the winch cable is passed through a pulley attached to the load; the cable returns and is anchored to a fixed point near the winch. When the winch winds the cable, it exerts force that is transmitted through the pulley but doubled or multiplied (depending on the number of pulleys used) to the end pulling the load. This allows for significant increase in pulling force.

Winch Applications

Winches are very useful for moving heavy loads in various situations including:

  • Vehicle Recovery: ideal for removing damaged or stuck vehicles in muddy terrain;
  • Construction: perfect for lifting heavy loads on construction sites;
  • Forestry Sector: useful for lifting logs and facilitating their movement;
  • Marine Sector: winches can help maneuver and lift boats;
  • Industry and Workshops: for installations and lifting materials/machinery in industrial and work environments;

Winch Components

The main components of a winch include:

  • Drum: cylinder around which the cable winds;
  • Cable: can be galvanized steel (durable but rigid and more dangerous if broken) or synthetic fiber (lightweight, manageable, safer but less resistant to heat and abrasion);
  • Motor: electric, hydraulic, manual or combustion engine;
  • Brake: maintains load position when the drum is stationary;
  • Pulley: used to redirect the cable and modify pulling effect;
  • Cable guide/lead pulley: helps wind cable properly preventing tangles and wear.

Types of Winches

Available on the market:

  • Manual or Hand-Crank Winch: operated by crank or lever. Generally suitable for light loads and hobby use;
  • Electric Winch: powered by 12/24V battery or 230V single-phase current. May include remote control for convenient operation;
  • Combustion Engine Winch: with 2-stroke or 4-stroke engine, these winches are suitable for continuous professional use requiring high load capacity;
  • Hydraulic Winch: use hydraulic system power to lift or pull heavy loads. Typically used for towing heavy vehicles in agricultural, marine or industrial settings;

Selection Criteria

To choose the most suitable model, consider:

  • Load Capacity: select a winch with at least 50% more capacity than the weight to be pulled. Using a pulley block can double the theoretical force;
  • Cable Type: Steel: abrasion-resistant but rigid and potentially dangerous. Synthetic: lightweight, safe and manageable, but less durable in harsh environments;
  • Pulling Speed: The winch's pulling speed indicates how quickly the cable winds onto the drum. It depends on motor power and applied load: heavier loads slow pulling. With a pulley, speed halves but force doubles;
  • Power Source: in remote areas prefer manual or combustion engine models;
  • Environmental Conditions: in sandy, salty or humid environments, choose corrosion-resistant models with sealed components.
